Agility Training

Agility Training - What To Expect

Dogs must be 12 months old for smaller and midsized breeds, 18 months for large and heavy set breeds. All dogs starting agility should be physically sound and be of suitable temperament. Dogs may enter agility training when the handler is able to demonstrate an acceptable level of off lead control (at the discretion of the agility instructors).

What is Agility?

Dog agility is a sport in which a handler directs a dog through a course of various obstacles in a race against time. Dogs run off-lead and must be directed towards each obstacle by voice, hand and body language.

Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course. Strategies exist to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs and handlers.

As you progress up through the levels of agility the degree of difficulty increases. The number of obstacles increase and more demanding pieces of equipment are added to a course.

Competition begins at novice level, and then progresses to excellent and eventually to masters level.

Objectives

Agility training compliments obedience training in building a working relationship between dog and handler. It is a fast and active sport and requires a happy and motivated pairing of dog and handler.

At Knox Obedience Dog Club we tailor your training session to what you wish to achieve with your dog. If you wish to trial in competition levels our instructors will work with you to achieve your goal. But if it’s just a load of fun you want, you’ve come to the right place!
